Infertility Problems in Men

By Connie Limon
Sexual intercourse without birth control for a year or more that does not result in a pregnancy could mean something is interfering with your efforts to have a child. It could be infertility, which is also known as subfertility. Infertility is the inability to conceive a child within one year. The cause for infertility may be you, your partner or a combination of things.

Infertility is not sterility. Sterile means you are unable to conceive a child and the problem lies either within you or your partner. The diagnosis of infertility just means that becoming pregnant is a challenge rather than it being impossible.

Signs or symptoms of infertility are rarely experienced. Men who have hormonal problems might have a change in voice or pattern of hair growth, or enlargement of breasts, or difficulty with sexual function. Women who experience infertility may have irregular menstrual periods or experience pain during menstruation and/or intercourse.

If one would be able to see the entire process from ovulation and fertilization you might wonder how things ever go right. The human reproductive process is complex. For things to go right, the processes of ovulation and fertilization need to work perfectly.
Although the cause of infertility can involve one or both partners, for many couples, the male partner is either the sole or a contributing cause. Multiple factors can account for difficulty with fertility.

Causes of male infertility include:

• Abnormal sperm production or function

• Impaired delivery of sperm

• Conditions related to a man’s general health and lifestyle

• Overexposure to certain environmental elements

Most cases of male infertility are due to sperm abnormalities that include:

• Impaired shape and movement of sperm

• Absent sperm production in testicles

Low sperm concentration

• Varicocele

• Undescended testicle

• Testosterone deficiency

• Klinefelter’s syndrome

• Infections

Problems with delivery of sperm from the penis into the vagina can cause infertility. These problems include:

• Sexual issues

• Retrograde ejaculation

• Blockage of epididymis or ejaculatory ducts

• No semen (ejaculate): This can occur in men with spinal cord injuries or diseases.

• Misplaced urinary opening

• Anti-sperm antibodies

• Cystic fibrosis

General health and lifestyle may affect fertility such as:

• Emotional stress

• Malnutrition

Obesity
• Cancer and its treatment

• Alcohol and drugs

• Other medical conditions

• Age (a gradual decline in fertility is common in men older than 35).

Other factors that may cause male infertility include:

• Pesticides and other chemicals

• Testicular exposure to overheating

• Substance abuse

Tobacco smoking

A medical exam may be advisable if you and your partner have been trying regularly to conceive for at least one year without a successful pregnancy. If you have low sperm count or a history of testicular, prostate or sexual problems, consider seeking a medical exam for infertility problems.

Further complications of being infertile may include:

• Depression

• Guilit

• Anger

• Stress

• Disappointment

• Resentment

• Blame

• Fear of losing partner because of infertility

• Diminished confidence and self-esteem

Treatment for infertility depends on the case, the duration of the problem, the age of the partners and their wishes. Not all causes for infertility can be corrected. There are various other ways a woman can still become pregnant which involves insemination or embryo transfer.

Erectile Dysfunction and Alcohol

Erectile Dysfunction and Alcohol By Kristy Annely

The position of alcohol in human society has always been unpredictable. In the era of prohibition, alcohol was considered the "devil in liquid form" and now studies indicate that moderate amounts of alcohol could actually be beneficial to overall health.

There are many questions on the effect of alcohol consumption on sexual health and the potential of the drink to interfere with libido and climax scenarios. Erectile dysfunction is probably the most common sexual dysfunction among men in the United States with about 300,000 cases diagnosed every year in addition to the vast majority of unreported cases. To understand the relationship between alcohol and erectile dysfunction, the process of achieving an erection needs to be understood. The brain is stimulated through physical (touch) and sensory perceptions and it directs the muscles of the penis to relax and this enhances blood flow to the penis. The pressure exerted by the incoming blood expands the penis, thereby creating an erection. The ability to maintain the erection depends on the capacity of the penile muscles to hold the blood for a certain period.

Erections thus depend on blood flow and that is why conditions like arterioscelerosis and diabetes that lead to hardened blood vessels and affect blood pressure cause erectile dysfunction. The primary action of alcohol is increasing blood volume, which in turn causes higher blood pressure. The state lasts till the excessive liquid has been removed from the blood by way of urine. Thus, in theory, alcohol consumption should assist erection and not cause erectile dysfunction. Also, alcohol acts as a sedative and may also help curb performance anxiety that is a major cause of erectile dysfunction in younger men. However, there are no studies to conclusively support or refute this claim. Hence, even though it could be true that drunken men have better sex, intoxication is not a cure for erectile dysfunction. Moreover, other forms of intoxication such as drug abuse and smoking have been shown to be the definitely cause of nearly a fourth of all dysfunctions.

Erectile Dysfunction and Smoking

By Kristy Annely

Whether people accept it or not, sex plays a pivotal role in a relationship and sexual dysfunctions can destroy even the most loving couple. However, when addressed in time and with proper treatment, even chronic cases of sexual dysfunction can be cured.

Erectile dysfunction or the inability to initiate or maintain an erection is the leading sexual dysfunction in men in the United States. Each year, despite the fact that more than thirty million men are diagnosed with the disorder, the majority of erectile dysfunctions go unreported. Until recently, erectile dysfunction was recognized as a metabolic issue and not a lifestyle related disorder. However, studies have brought to light that those lifestyle choices like substance abuse and smoking are responsible for over 25% of all erectile dysfunction cases.

Every erection problem is believed to be related to blood flow since erections occur when blood rushes in to the penis. Anything that interferes with this process is the likely cause of the dysfunction. Apart from the obvious damage to the respiratory system, smoking does considerable damage to the body's circulation. The carbon monoxide fumes from cigarettes bind with the hemoglobin in the blood and reduce its oxygen carrying capacity. The carbon particles also lead to the deformation of the heart valves and reduce the count of the red blood cells (RBCs). All these factors combine to complicate cardiovascular problems that cause the arteries to harden (arterioscelerosis) and reduce blood supply to peripheral regions, especially the genitals. Thus smoking is directly responsible not only for erectile dysfunctions, but also for low sperm counts, increased sperm mortality and loss of libido.

When erectile dysfunctions are smoking related, they cannot be completely cured with medications like Viagra. The situation is further worsened when the smoker has conditions like diabetes and heart troubles. The only remedy, although it might seem like the end of the world to most men, is to quit smoking. There are many programs available over the Internet and through de-addiction centers that the smokers can make use of. What is most important is that quitting smoking means more than just freedom from sexual dysfunction, it also means your general health will improve, [http://www.e-ErectileDysfunction.com]Erectile Dysfunction provides detailed information on Erectile Dysfunction, Erectile Dysfunction Treatments, Cause of Erectile Dysfunctions, Erectile Dysfunction Drugs and more.
