Ayurveda description of Medho Dhatu ( Body fat )

Formation of Medho Dhatu ( body fat )

“Swatejombu gunaasnigdho drktam medhobhijayate”

Medho dahtu (body fat) is formed from mamsa dhatu (muscles). The nutrients required to form medho dhatu are present in mamsa dhatu. These nutrients get metabolized with water and form medho dahtu. Medho dahtu is snigdha (oily) and soft .

Functions of medho dahtu

“medah snehaswedou pustimastnanncha karoti ”

  1. Because of medhodhatu the body looks soft and fair.

  2. It gives a good shape to body.

  3. It helps to produce sweat and keeps the body skin moist. It prevents drying of skin

  4. It strengthens the body and provides energy

  5. It nourishes the next dhatu asthi ( bone )

  6. It protects internal organs by providing them a cushioning effect.

  7. It controls body temperature.

What happens when medho dhatu increases? ( Increase in body fat )

  1. Increased medho dhatu causes tiredness
  2. Even a slight exertion causes dyspnoea
  3. Buttocks, breast and abdomen get enlarged and they become pendulous.
  4. It leads to athisthoulyata (obesity)

Effects of athisthoulyata ( effects of obesity )

  1. Lifespan Reduces.
  2. Body resistance to diseases reduces.
  3. Erectile dysfunction: Inability to perform intercourse due to impotence.
  4. Quantity of semen reduces.
  5. Weakness
  6. Increased sweating and offensive body odor
  7. Increased appetite and thirst

Causes of athisthoulyata ( reasons for obesity )

  1. Overeating
  2. Increased use of sweets, oily foods and cold foods.
  3. Sedentary work
  4. Sexual inactiveness
  5. Sleeping in afternoons
  6. Stress free life
  7. Hereditary.

How can we reduce body fat.

  1. Consuming dry foods
  2. Fasting
  3. Eating very little quantity of food
  4. Exercising well
  5. Avoiding afternoon sleep

Old age and chronic illness cause reduction of body fat.
