Relationship between majja dhatu (bone marrow) and shukra dhatu (semen)

  1. According to Ayurveda shukra dhatu (semen) is produced by nourishing part of majja dhatu.
  2. A healthy majja dhatu leads to a healthy shukra dhatu . " Majja sneham balam shukra pushtim pooranam astinaamcha karoti " .This means Majja dhatu nourishes body and helps to maintain its functions. Majja dhatu strengthens body, fills bones and nourishes shukra dhatu (semen).
  3. According to modern sciences scientists are trying to establish relation ship between bone marrow and sperms. In a BBC report (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6547675.stm) scientists have successfully made immature sperm cells from human bone marrow samples.
  4. Doctors have published papers about "Recovery of spermatogenesis and successful conception after bone marrow transplant for acute leukaemia:" ( http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/15/1/83 )
  5. According to Chinese medicines theory .Marrow is formed from the overflowing kidney semen that is stored in the bone cavities. Kidneys produce marrow and the bones are the dwelling places for the marrow. Therefore, both semen and marrow are the most treasured part of the human body, and the Chinese compare the most valuable things in the world to them.

Marijuana smoking damages sperm

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/4482.php
Men who smoke marijuana frequently damage their fertility in several different ways, research suggests.

Scientists at Buffalo University found regular smokers had significantly less seminal fluid, and a lower sperm count.

Their sperm were also more likely to swim too fast too early, leading to burn-out before they reach the egg.

Lead researcher Dr Lani Burkman said: 'The bottom line is, the active ingredients in marijuana are doing something to sperm.'

Marijuana contains several chemicals known to have an impact on human physiology, including THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

The researchers believe that THC may disrupt the way sperm swim, or it may block mechanisms designed to weed out malfunctioning sperm.

Obese Men Have Less Semen, More Sperm Abnormalities, And Should Lose Weight Before Trying For A Baby

Obese Men Have Less Semen, More Sperm Abnormalities, And Should Lose Weight Before Trying For A Baby
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/114574.php

Obese men should consider losing weight if they want to have children, a scientist told the 24th annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

"We felt that it was possible that male overweight might contribute to fertility problems," he said, "particularly since it is a known risk factor for problems in conceiving among women." "Other studies have suggested an association between male obesity and increased DNA damage in the sperm, which can be associated with reduced fertility as well," said Dr. Shayeb.

The semen analysis showed that the men in Group B, who had an optimal BMI (20-25, as classified by WHO), had higher levels of normal sperm than those in the other groups. They also had higher semen volume. There was no significant difference between the four BMI groups in sperm concentration or motility.

"There has been a significant rise in the numbers of men with poorer semen parameters in the industrialised world," said Dr. Shayeb, "but this has not been reflected so far in male infertility. To compare male BMI in these two groups therefore seemed to us to be a logical next step."

"Adopting a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet, and regular exercise will, in the vast majority of cases, lead to a normal BMI. We are pleased to be able to add improved semen quality to the long list of benefits that we know are the result of an optimal body weight."

Antidepressant Associated Changes In Semen Parameters

Antidepressant Associated Changes In Semen Parameters

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/57127.php

UroToday.com - The authors describe 2 patients who have had severely impaired sperm concentration and motility closely associated with the use of antidepressant medications.

They noted a temporal relationship between abnormal semen parameters and antidepressant therapy in these two patients. Each had normal semen parameters off medications.

The evaluation of each patient was unremarkable. While on antidepressant medications, both patients produced semen samples with marked impairment of sperm concentration and/or motility. Each patient demonstrated a normalization of sperm concentration and motility after discontinuation of antidepressants.

The authors hypothesize that Serotonin-reuptake inhibitor antidepressants may affect sperm transport, resulting in impaired sperm motility and concentration for some patients.

25 per cent of infertility patients have sexual problems: survey

25 per cent of infertility patients have sexual problems: survey

http://www.thehindu.com/2006/02/13/stories/2006021315831000.htm

Sexual problems can be both the cause and the effect of infertility and infertility treatments themselves

can often cause sexual dysfunction in normal couples, a study by the Indian Institute of Sexual Medicine of

Aakash Institute of Fertility and Research, has shown.

Out of a total number of 5,728 infertility patients surveyed by the institute from 1996 to 2005, 20 to 25 per cent were found to have sexual problems. Among male patients, 89 per cent had erectile dysfunction, 20 per cent suffered from anejaculation, 32 per cent had extreme premature ejaculation, and three per cent reported lower libidos, K.S. Jeyarani Kamaraj, infertility specialist of the institute said while presenting

the results of the study during the First International Conference on Sexology organised by the institute here on Sunday.

Among sexual problems causing infertility, erectile dysfunction was found to be the main factor. While factors such as poor sex education, lack of sexual knowledge and conservatism were found to be the cause of unconsummated marriages, urban-life related stress, long working hours/working in shifts and lack of privacy were found to be the cause of infrequent intercourse between couples, she added.

In an interactive session devoted to lots of plain-talking on the myths and realities surrounding sex, renowned sexologist Prakash Kothari said sexual disorders were amongst the most common human disorders.

Anxiety over sexual performance bred a cycle of conflict, hostility, fear, shame and guilt and several myths and misconceptions paralysed sexual response. Masturbation was often found to be a safe sexual outlet as it could avoid unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases and did not result, as was often believed, in impotency.

Conditions such as diabetes and alcoholism affected sexual performance as they resulted in lesser blood flow to the genital organs. Lack of semen did not affect sexual performance and it was a myth to state that celibacy led to increased physical strength.

Another misconception was that the hymen was a proof of a woman's virginity or that the size of genital organs mattered in sexual performance. Homosexuality and lesbianism were not aberrant sexual behaviour.

Aphrodisiacs may provoke desire but if overdosed, they could also affect performance, he said.
