Men and women can lower their risk of acquiring
herpes simplex virus type 2, which causes most
genital herpes cases, by consistently using condoms, according to a study published in the new issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, Reuters Health reports. The 18-month study -- which involved more than 1,843 adults who either had a sexually transmitted disease or four or more sexual partners in the last year -- found that participants who used condoms at least three-quarters of the time were one-quarter less likely to acquire
HSV-2 than other participants. Overall, about 6% of study participants contracted
HSV-2. Condom efficacy against
HSV-2 transmission has not always been clear, study author Anna Wald of the University of Washington said, adding, "This is the first study to show it's effective in both men and women." Wald and colleagues in a previous study found that consistent condom use reduced the risk of
HSV-2 transmission in women but had inconclusive results among men (Norton, Reuters Health, 11/14).
