Rasa dhatu is formed when agni digests food. When food is completely digested with the help of normally secreted digestive juices, the nutritive part of the digested food is called as rasa. This nutritive juice nourishes all cells and tissues of body. It is analogous to extra cellular and intracellular fluids.

Production of shukra dhatu: The core nutrients of majja dhatu (bone marrow) help in production of Shukradhatu.(see Relationship between majja dhatu (bone marrow) and shukra dhatu (semen).
According to texts of ayurveda shukra dhatu is pervading all over the body (sarva shareera gathaha).

Yada payasi sarpistu gudaschekshou raso yadha
shareereshu tadha shukram nrinaam vidyaat bhisagvarah ||

According ayurveda when rasa (lymph) is mixed with "ranjaka pitta"(haemoglobin) it forms Rakta dhatu or blood

Functions of Rakta or blood according to ayurveda

"Raktam varna prasaadanam mamsa pushtim jeevayathicha"

Rakta dhatu enhances tone and complexion of skin. It strengthens and nourishes "mamsa dhatu" (Muscles). The whole physiology of body is dependent on this tissue. Rakta strengthens the body and keeps it healthy. It increases life span and keeps the person active.

Ayurveda definition of Mamsa Dhatu ( Muscle tissue )

According ayurveda Rakta dhatu or blood tissue when subjected to further processing by its agni forms mamsa dhatu. Vayu takes part in solidification and jalabhuta helps in softening it. Thus mamsa dhatu is formed

"maamsa vahaanam srotasaam snayurmoolam twakcha"

The muscles originates from snayus (ligaments) . Even few originate from skin

Relationship between majja dhatu (bone marrow) and shukra dhatu (semen)

According to Ayurveda shukra dhatu (semen) is produced by nourishing part of majja dhatu.

A healthy majja dhatu leads to a healthy shukra dhatu . " Majja sneham balam shukra pushtim pooranam astinaamcha karoti " .This means Majja dhatu nourishes body and helps to maintain its functions. Majja dhatu strengthens body, fills bones and nourishes shukra dhatu (semen).

During the formation of asthi dhatu or bone, vayu bhuta creates spaces in bones. These spaces are filled with nourishing tissues of medha or fat which help in formation of majja or bone marrow.

Functions of majja dhatu:
"Majja sneham balam shukra pushtim pooranam astinaamcha karoti "

Ayurveda description of 7 tissues or Dhatus

There are several definitions for dhatu in ayurveda. Few of them are given below.

"Shareera dharanathdhatawaha" - The tissues which nourish the body and support it are called as dhatus.

"Poshanadharanayoho" - Those which nourish the successive tissue and support it.

"Dadhati datteya vaa shareera manaha praanaan" - these tissues nourish and support the body, mind and life Dhatus are "Shakti yukta dravyas". i.e they supply nutrients to other vital tissues and keep the body healthy. They nourish and support the successive tissues.

Ayurveda definition of asthi dhatu ( Bones or Skeletal system )

According to texts of ayurveda asthis or bones are formed from the nutrients supplied by medha dhatu through asthivaha srothas. The nutrients in medho dhatu which is meant to nourish asthi dhatu are processed in asthivaha srothas by dhatwagnis. Dhatwagni and bhutagni (vayu, agneya and prithvi) bring about hardness and heaviness to these nutrients which form asthi or bone.
