To be fertile, a man must be able to deliver an adequate quantity of normal sperm to a woman’s reproductive system, and sperm must be able to fertilize the egg. Conditions that interfere with this process can make a man less fertile. The various causes of male infertility and their Ayurvedic herbal treatment are discussed here.
The most common male infertility factors include azoospermia (no sperm cells are produced) and oligospermia (few sperm cells are produced). Sometimes, the quality of sperm cells is very poor, resulting in poor fertility. Treatment depends upon the identifiable cause.
Conditions that increase the temperature of the testes greatly reduce sperm quantity and quality. Undescended testes should be treated medically or surgically before the age of two years, to avoid permanent damage. Varicose veins of the testes can be treated using traditional Ayurvedic formulations like Punarnava Guggulu, Kankayan Vati, Arshkuthar Ras, Suranadi Vati, Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa) and Kakmachi (Solanum nigrum). Working in an environment of high temperature, and exposure to chemicals and other industrial toxins should be best avoided. The damage done by these factors to sperm production, can be treated using medicines like Aswagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Kapikachhu (Mucuna pruriens), Vasa (Adhatoda vasika), Vidarikand (Ipomoea digitata), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Safed Musli (Asparagus adscendence), Samudrashok (Argyreia speciosa), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) and Pippali (Piper longum).
Hormonal disorders may also interfere with sperm production. Hyperprolactinemia and other pituitary gland disorders may be treated using Kanchnaar Guggulu, Panch Tikta Ghruta Guggulu, Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Mogra (Jasminum sambac) and Musta (Cyperus rotundus). Hypothyriodism may be treated using Arogya Vardhini, Kanchnaar Guggulu and Punarnava Guggulu. Hypogonadism may be treated using Kapikacchu, Ashwagandha, Bala, Vidarikand, Safed Musli and Shatavari. Disorders of the adrenal glands may be treated using Gokshuradi Guggulu, Gomutra Haritaki, Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Saariva and Deodar (Cedrus deodara).
Mumps, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases can affect sperm production by causing inflammation and obstruction in the male genital tract. This condition may be treated using Aswagandha , Shatavari, Yashtimadhuk ,Pippali , Guduchi, Kutki, Punarnava, Kaishor Guggulu and Triphala Guggulu. Medicated oils like Mahanarayan oil (containing mainly Shatavari), Mahamash oil (containing mainly black gram) and Saindhav oil are used for local application on the scrotal skin.
Genetic disorders, use of medications and recreational drugs, exposure to radiation, smoking, and the excessive use of steroids and alcohol can also affect male fertility.
Some men do have a sufficient quantity of sperms, but are infertile because of the inability to achieve or have sustained erection (called erectile dysfunction or impotence). This condition may be due to physical causes like inadequate blood flow to the penis, diabetes, neurological defects and hormonal problems. Erectile dysfunction may be treated using medicines like Agnitundi Vati, Vishtinduk Vati, Tapyadi Loha, Trayodashang Guggulu, Abhrak Bhasma, Kapikachhu, Bala, Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Triphala (Three fruits), Draksha (Vitis vinifera), Musta and Kutaj (Holharrhina antidysentrica). These medicines may also be used to treat retrograde ejaculation, in which the sperm goes backwards into the bladder, instead of coming out of the penis. Psychological inhibition can be treated by using medicines like Jayphal (Myristica fragrans), Talimkhana (Asteracantha longifolia), Parsik Yavani (Hyoscyamus niger), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) and Vacha (Acorus calamus).
This is, thus, a short description of the various causes of male infertility and their Ayurvedic herbal treatment.

Few years in the college could result in putting on weight. Fried foods in the cafeteria, skip meals, irregular meals, no time for exercise, all these excuses can be avoided. Most important is to convince yourself you have to maintain your immune system at peak so that you can stay healthy and fit for your studies. With that in mind, you can’t forget about learning how to eat healthy foods while at college.
Settling into an eating routine is very important as this will keep the body metabolism high, which means burning more calories.
For example:
Take breakfast before class. Make sure you wake up early to take breakfast before attending lesson. Never skip breakfast. You can prepare instant oatmeal for the start of the day. Oat takes longer time to digest and helps to keep the metabolism going.
Snack between classes. Make sure you consume smaller meals between classes. Take with you wheat bread instead of white bread. Break into 5 to 6 smaller meals instead of 3. Remember to drink more water. Water hydrates your body and helps to keep body cells function well.
Avoid fried foods in cafeteria. Give no chance to pizza and greasy foods. It is important to make healthy decisions. Chose more fish, lean meat, vegetables, fruits, or soybean. Take higher protein and less carbohydrate in order to lose weight. Also, remember to consume less sugar. Fruit sugar such as fructose is the best replacement for white sugar. If you want to drink coffee, you might consider taking fruits or fruit juices.
Avoid alcohol. Celebrating at party can be difficult without alcohol. Replace alcohol with cocktail or fruit juices. Alcohol has more empty calories than most of the foods you can eat at the cafeteria combined.
Add an exercise routine at a local gym. There are times after school when everyone goes for other activities, that is the time for your workouts. You will not become a bodybuilder or power lifter but it will keep your metabolism high enough to stay slim and fit.
The above guides could be difficult to implement at first but with careful planning it can be done easily. College is one of the best times of your life. Don’t let poor eating choices ruin your health. Swear that you will want to graduate from college healthier than before.

Impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to attain or maintain an adequate erection for sexual satisfaction. It affects up to 30 million American men.
An erection depends on an intact nervous system and adequate blood flow to the penis. When a man is sexually stimulated, the brain sends signals to the arteries in the penis causing them to dilate and fill up with blood. Special sponge-like erectile structures that run the length of the penile shaft, two corpus cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum, become engorged with blood causing the penis to become firm. The swollen erectile tissue compresses the veins, preventing the blood from draining and thus the erection is maintained.
The penile arteries are very small, about 1/3 the size of the coronary arteries so they are very vulnerable to damage. Damaged blood vessels do not allow adequate blood flow, and low flow equals a weak or non-existent erection.
The four most common causes of erectile dysfunction are smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure. All of these heath problems damage blood vessels. Of the four, only smoking is a otherwise healthy young man’s problem. Smoking doubles the risk of moderate to severe erectile dysfunction.
A man who starts smoking at the age of 18 and continues for 20 years may have his sex life seriously derailed by the age of 38. Smoking is the most common cause of ED for men under 40. The more cigarettes smoked, the greater the risk. As men age other conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, may develop further compounding the problem.
This kind of damage is very hard to reverse – only 25% of men will see improvement in their erectile dysfunction if they quit smoking. Other options include drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis; however, these therapies are most effective when combined with smoking cessation.
The good news – smoking rates in California are on the decline and are the second lowest in the United States. The bad news is 17% of Californian men and 9% of women still smoke.
In Canada, graphic pictures of smoking related diseases, including erectile dysfunction, appear on cigarette packages; in studies more than 70% of adults and 90% of teenagers found these warnings effective and 44% of smokers said these images increased their motivation to quit. Why don’t we have these warnings on cigarette packages in the United States? Maybe the $100,000 a day Big Tobacco spends on Washington lobbyists has something to do with it.
May 31 is World No Tobacco Day. Pass it on.

Children who are overweight or obese have a significantly higher prevalence of psoriasis, and teens with psoriasis, regardless of their body weight, have higher cholesterol levels, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published online in the Journal of Pediatrics. The study findings suggest that higher heart disease risk for patients with psoriasis starts in childhood in the form of higher cholesterol levels.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that often starts early in life and, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation, affects more than 7 million Americans.
“This study suggests a link between obesity and psoriasis in children,” said study lead author Corinna Koebnick, PhD, a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s Department of Research & Evaluation in Pasadena, Calif. “But our study findings also suggest that the higher heart disease risk for patients with psoriasis starts in childhood in the form of higher cholesterol levels. We may need to monitor youth with psoriasis more closely for cardiovascular risk factors, especially if they are obese.”
“Very little is known about psoriasis in children where the disease is mostly viewed and treated as a burdensome skin condition and less considered a metabolic disease,” adds Dr. Koebnick.
“Psoriasis may also put children at risk for metabolic disease, as seen in adults, so studies such as these are extremely important in helping primary care providers learn the best way to care for these children,” notes co-author Amy Porter, MD, Southern California Permanente Medical Group’s regional physician lead for weight management, and pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente’s Baldwin Park Medical Center.
Epidemiologic studies in adults have shown that patients with psoriasis are at a higher risk of developing metabolic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart attack and stroke. In adults, obesity has also been linked to a higher risk of developing psoriasis, and obesity, like psoriasis, is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
“Both conditions are characterized by a chronic low-level inflammation,” notes Dr. Koebnick. “Yet, we know little to nothing about the metabolic risk of psoriasis, especially when combined with obesity in children.” Psoriasis in children may increase blood cholesterol levels, and this may additionally be triggered by the presence of obesity. While the present study has limitations due to its cross-sectional design where both body weight and information on psoriasis were assessed at the same time, future studies based on this cohort will address these issues.

WHEAT grass therapy can thus be effectively used for skin diseases and ulcerated wounds. By retarding bacterial action, it promotes cell activity and normal regrowth. The chlorophyll content present in wheat grass enhances heart and lung functions. Capillary activity also increases, while toxemia is reduced. By increasing iron content in the blood and thereby haemoglobin, lungs function better. Oxygenation improves and the effect of carbon-dioxide is minimised.
Wheat Grass Juice Therapy
Wheat grass juice furnishes the body with vital nourishment, providing extra energy to the body. This juice contains nearly 70 per cent of chlorophyll. It is a rich source of vitamins A, B, C and contains minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur, cobalt, and zinc. The chlorophyll contained in wheat grass juice is very beneficial for the body. It purifies the blood due to its high vitamin and mineral contents. This property is used by the body to cleanse and rebuild itself. By drinking this juice regularly, toxins can be neutralised. It thus helps to maintain good health.
Constituent of Wheat Grass
tHe chief constituent of wheat grass is chlorophyll which nature utilises as a body cleanser, builder and neutraliser of toxins. Dr. Fisher, a Noble Prize winner, used chlorophyll to treat anaemia. As early as July, 1940, the American Journal of Surgery, reported 1,2000 cases of peritonitis, brain ulcer, pyorrhoea and skin disorders cured by chlorophyll.
The chlorophyll molecule bears close resemblance to haemoglobin, the red pigmentation in human blood, and differs only in the central element which in blood is iron and in chlorophyll, magnesium. Owing to their close molecular resemblance.
Skin Diseases
If has been scientifically proved that chlorophyll arrests growth and development of harmful bacteria. Wheat grass therapy can thus be effectively used for skin diseases and ulcerated wounds. By retarding bacterial action, it promotes cell activity and normal regrowth. Regular drinking of wheat grass juice creates an unfavourable environment for bacterial growth.
Digestive System Disorders
Wheat grass juice used as an enema helps detoxify the walls of the colon. The general procedure is to give an enema with lukewarm water. After waiting for 20 minutes, 100 to 125 m.litre of wheat grass juice enema is given. This should be retained for 15 minutes.
Circulatory Disorders
The chlorophyll content present in wheat grass enhances heart and lung functions. Capillary activity also increases, while toxemia is reduced. By increasing iron content in the blood and thereby haemoglobin, lungs function better. Oxygenation improves and the effect of carbon-dioxide is minimised. The chlorophyll content present in wheat grass enhances heart and lung functions. Several diseases can be treated successfully by regular drinking of wheat grass juice. These include: arthritis, psoriasis, premature greying and falling of hair, general weakness and debility, kidney stones, weak eyesight, abdominal pain, asthma, constipation and insomnia.
Many physicians at Hippocrates Health institute at Boston have tested the miraculous effectiveness of the wheat grass therapy. They have proved satisfactorily that wheat grass chlorophyll is a New Age food — medicine capable of alleviating the problems of sick humanity.
An exclusive diet of wheat grass can be used beneficially in treating diseases. In adopting this mode of treatment, the patient should undertake fast on wheat grass for seven days. Such a fast can pleasantly cleanse and nourish at the same time. One can be confident of complete safety and real health
How to Grow and Use Wheat grass
Wheat grass can be grown in any sheltered place where the direct rays of the sun do not reach from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and where the temperature is mild. The direct rays of the sun have a tendency to sap the strength from the grass. The round stalks flatten out and become limp.
For growing wheat grass a good variety of wheat should be soaked for eight to 10 hours. The water should then be drained and those grains allowed to sprout for 15 hours. Earthen pots or wooden trays can be used to grow the wheat grass. They should be filled with compost manure and the wheat sprouts should be spared. They should be covered with a dark cloth or kept away from the sunlight in a room. They should be sprinkled with water once or twice a day and allowed to stay as such for six to seven days the grass grows five to seven inches high.
The grass can be cut with a scissor. It should be immediately washed and group. Thereafter, the juice of the ground pulp should be extracted through a fine piece of cloth. To derive maximum advantage, the pulp should be ground and the juice extracted for two or three times. The juice so extracted should be taken immediately, as its efficacy reduces every minute and the medicinal value is completely lost after three hours.
