smoking and sexual health

Impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to attain or maintain an adequate erection for sexual satisfaction. It affects up to 30 million American men.

An erection depends on an intact nervous system and adequate blood flow to the penis. When a man is sexually stimulated, the brain sends signals to the arteries in the penis causing them to dilate and fill up with blood. Special sponge-like erectile structures that run the length of the penile shaft, two corpus cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum, become engorged with blood causing the penis to become firm. The swollen erectile tissue compresses the veins, preventing the blood from draining and thus the erection is maintained.

The penile arteries are very small, about 1/3 the size of the coronary arteries so they are very vulnerable to damage. Damaged blood vessels do not allow adequate blood flow, and low flow equals a weak or non-existent erection.

The four most common causes of erectile dysfunction are smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure. All of these heath problems damage blood vessels. Of the four, only smoking is a otherwise healthy young man’s problem. Smoking doubles the risk of moderate to severe erectile dysfunction.

A man who starts smoking at the age of 18 and continues for 20 years may have his sex life seriously derailed by the age of 38. Smoking is the most common cause of ED for men under 40. The more cigarettes smoked, the greater the risk. As men age other conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, may develop further compounding the problem.

This kind of damage is very hard to reverse – only 25% of men will see improvement in their erectile dysfunction if they quit smoking. Other options include drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis; however, these therapies are most effective when combined with smoking cessation.

The good news – smoking rates in California are on the decline and are the second lowest in the United States. The bad news is 17% of Californian men and 9% of women still smoke.

In Canada, graphic pictures of smoking related diseases, including erectile dysfunction, appear on cigarette packages; in studies more than 70% of adults and 90% of teenagers found these warnings effective and 44% of smokers said these images increased their motivation to quit. Why don’t we have these warnings on cigarette packages in the United States? Maybe the $100,000 a day Big Tobacco spends on Washington lobbyists has something to do with it.

May 31 is World No Tobacco Day. Pass it on.

1 In 10 Men Suffer From Erectile Dysfunction Due To Work Related Stress

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/112046.php
New research has shown that 1 in 10 men experience erectile dysfunction (ED) and as many as 1 in 5 men suffer a loss of libido, as a result of work-related stress.

These latest figures suggest that 90% of men have shown at least one clinical feature of stress due to work but only 54% of men know that stress from work may be the cause of their ED. Stress, either at work or home, is a known cause of ED and prolonged stress is associated with low testosterone levels.

Unfortunately 44% of men would not go to their GP if they experience erection problems, and those who do go to their GP about their ED wait on average 17 months before going for a consultation

Healing Herbs for Erectile Dysfunction

A few weeks ago we talked about nutrients that could help increase sex drive and increase the likelihood of a longer lasting erection. I’d like to add to that discussion by adding a few popular herbs that are known to have the same effects.

Ashwagandha (or, Indian Winter Cherry) – The roots of this Indian shrub are used in Ayurvedic medicine and offers numerous health benefits, including anti-stress, rejuvenation, anti-inflammation. It’s also traditionally used as to enhance sexual performance.

Gingko – There’s a lot of research right now being poured into the herb gingko bilboa and all its miraculous healing properties. Gingko improves blood flow throughout the body and can increase the amount of blood that gets sent to the penis, especially at the time of an erection. Be careful not to take too much Gingko, though, especially if you also take aspirin – gingko is a blood thinner and could cause bleeding if taken in excess.

Ginseng – Ginseng is a popular herb used in Chinese medicine and in tea. Studies have shown that it helps men with erectile dysfunction perform sexually.

Maca – This is a root-like vegetable from the Andes Mountains and is used to increase energy, vitality, fertility, and sexual virility.

Yohimbe – This is not actually an herb, but is actually an extract that comes from the bark of the African yohimbe tree. If your ED has possible psychological causes, then yohimbe might be a good option for you. Yohimbe may cause a few side effects, so speak to you doctor before you try this herb, especially if you have high blood pressure.

Epimediurn – Also known as horny goat weed, this herb has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and will raise low testosterone and thyroid levels. All of these herbs can be purchased and used on their own and many can be found in herbal supplements that are marketed to increase your sex drive, sexual performance, and sexual pleasure.

Erectile Dysfunction And The Prostate: What Are The Connections?

Erectile Dysfunction And The Prostate: What Are The Connections?
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/117490.php

UroToday.com – Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in American men and causes more than 60,000 deaths annually. Treatment of prostate cancer with either surgery, radiation therapy, cryotherapy or medical treatment is associated with significant life altering morbidity. Both incontinence  and erectile dysfunction (ED) are too often sequelae of these treatment alternatives. ED can be a significant complication and can alter the life of both the prostate cancer patient and his partner. Newer modifications of the radical prostatectomy with nerve sparing techniques are the cornerstone of erection preservation.

Time following radical prostatectomy has been shown to increase erectile function such that more patients have functional erections at 3 years than 1 year after surgery. With the advent of PDE 5 inhibitors, many men can have improved functional erections and return to active coitus. Prevention of ED is also an important management technique. Evidence is gathering that prophylaxis with regular vasoactive injection or daily PDE 5 agents may be an integral part of preservation of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle function. Combination medical therapy and surgical penile prosthesis implantation are also options for patients failing oral PDE 5 inhibitors.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are an age independent risk factor for ED as demonstrated by large epidemiologic studies such as the MSAM-7 study. Etiology may be mediated via alpha adrenergic over activity. The large concentrations of PDE5 receptors in prostate, bladder and urethra suggest that PDE5 inhibitors may be a treatment alternative for the ED LUTS combination.
