About Tinospora Cordifolia or Guduchi
The herb Guduchi is a climber. It belongs to Minispermaceae family and has a botanical name Tinospora Cordifolia. This herb usually grows in tropical regions and is available in abundance in India, Myanmar and Srilanaka .
The structure of this plant is explained below
: A big climber (glabrous).Climbs on large trees.
Roots:-long thread like, aerial, arise from branches.
Bark Thin, greyish or creamy white in colour, When peeled fleshy stem is exposed.
Leaves:- Cordate (heart shaped), membranous, juicy.
Flowers:- Bloom during summer
Male flower:-Small, yellow or green coloured occur in clusters.
Female flower Occur singly.
Fruits:-Pea shaped ,fleshy, shiny turn red when boiled. Occur in winter
Seeds:- curved, pea sized. Flowers and fruits .
The climber bears heart shaped leaves and yellow colored flowers. The fruits are round and turn to bright red color when ripe.
Chemical Composition and pharmacology
PHARMACOLOGY: Studies on induced oedema and arthritis and on human arthritis proved anti-inflammatory potency of the water extract of plant. It also has antipyretic action. This drug relaxes the intestinal and uterine smooth muscles. It is proved effective in prevention of fibrosis and in stimulating regeneration in hepatic tissue

Giloya, Guduchi (Hindi), Gulancha (Bengali),Tippaatigo (Telugu), Shindilakodi (Tamil), Gulavel (Marathi),Galo (Gujarati), Amrita balli (kannada).
Texts of ayurveda explain medicinal properties of giloy as follows.
According to ayurveda Guduchi has both bitter (tikta rasa) and astringent (kashaya rasa) tastes. It increases moistness of body tissues (snigdha), has hot potency (ushna veerya) and is heavy to digest (Guru).
Ayurveda Medicinal properties, health benefits and Uses of Giloy or Guduchi
Amrita is very effective in skin disorders. It helps to boost resistance of skin to microbes and is found effective in leprosy and ulcers formed due to gout. This herb heals the herpes lesions and also accelerates the healing process of wounds in venereal diseases.
In Digestive Disorders
Usage of Guduchi is indicated in conditions like indigestion, excess thirst, acidity, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dysentery and vomiting. It is a good anti spasmodic and reduces stomach pain which arises due to intestinal spasms. Giloy is a very good hepatotonic (rejuvenates liver) .Preparations of this herb is very effective in jaundice, hepatic fibrosis and other diseases related to liver. This herb expels toxins accumulated in liver and a best herb to detoxify liver.
In Circulatory system diseases:
Texts of Ayurveda eulogize this herb as a cardiac tonic as it strengthens the heart. Guduchi helps to purify blood (rakta dhatu) and expel the toxins which are circulating in it. Because of this property it is useful in gout to control blood uric acid level.
In Illness of Respiratory system:
It strengthens the lungs and reduces chronic cough
In Reproductive system:

- Fresh juice of guduchi (10 ml ) has to be mixed with equal quantity of honey. Consuming this mixture in empty stomach in morning help to reduce productive cough.
