Belongs to family Liliaceae and grows throughout Nepal, Sri Lanka, India and the Himalayas. It is a climber which grows up to 2 meters. It is also known by other Sanskrit names Shataveerya, Bahusutha, and Atirasa. Roots of this herb is rich in medicinal properties and are regularly used in preparation of ayurvedic medicines.
Pharmacology of Ayurveda describes this herb as heavy to digest (guru) and it contains more moisture (snigdha). It is sweet and little bitter to taste (madhura rasa and tikta rasa). The sweet taste remains even after digestion (Madhura Vipaka). It is cold in potency (sheeta veerya)

Shatavari mitigates vata and pitta dosha. Hence it is used in diseases which originate due to vitiation of these two doshas.
This herb has anti-inflammatory properties. Hence the oil prepared using this herb is used for body and head massages in conditions like joint pains, weakness of muscles, stress related headaches and body pain.
