Hingvastak Churna or  hingwashtak churna is a powdered form of eight herbs. This has innumerable benefits or uses. It is Hingu Ashtaka Churna that means it has eight ingredients including hing or asafoetida.The contents of this powder are easily available on kitchen shelves and useful in digestion. 

This powder is used in problems of digestive system. According to ayurvedic texts “ama” or body toxins get accumulated due to indigestion of food. The body toxins block the path ways of nutrients and prevent them from reaching the target tissues. This causes the under nourishment of body and lowers the functionality of tissues. Accumulation of body toxins lower the body immunity and pave way for diseases. Hence the food consumed must be healthy and get digested well in time. A well digested food nourishes sapta dhatus or body tissues and boosts body health. A person who has good digestion is always devoid of health issues. 

Benefits of Hingvastak churna:

All of us experience indigestion one or the other time. Such indigestions have to be tackled naturally. Ayurveda acharyas suggest a preparation called “Higvastak churna”  to increase digestion and relieve indigestion. The hingwastak powder helps to digest the body toxin (ama) and prevents its accumulation. The contents of this powder are spices which are regularly used in kitchen. 

Hingvastak churna helps in indigestion and relieves constipation. Constipation can also cause erectile dysfunction, bloating and flatulance. These are relieved by using this powder.

Persons who have anorexia or loss of appetite can use this preparation. It kindles the appetite and helps in good digestion.

Ingredients of Hingwashtak churna or powder

This can be prepared at home easily by using ingredients available on kitchen shelves.  Here is a method of preparing “hingwastak powder or churna”.

Long Pepper or Pippali - (Read Ayurveda Health Benefits of Long Pepper or Pippali )- Long pepper kindles appetite and sets right digestion. It is helpful in weight loss when used with honey and acts as a vajikarana food when used with milk.

Black Pepper - Black pepper also has almost same health benefits like long pepper. It enhances the taste and clears throat and lungs.

Ajwain or Carom Seeds : Ajwain is widely used in Indian cuisine. It is used in various home remedy to ease indigestion and flatulance. Omam water is a well known home remedy for loss of appetite.

Black Cumin Seeds or Kala Jeera - This spice also has almost same health benefits as regular jeera.

Pure asafoetida or Hing : (Read Ayurveda Health Benefits of Asafoetida or Hing ) Hing helps in indigestion, flatulence and bloating of stomach. Hence it is used in Indian cuisine to make the food easy for digestion. It increases appetite and promotes good circulation of blood.

How to Use Hinwashtaka Churna ?

Hingvasta churna has to be used with ghee ( Ayurveda health benefits of ghee or clarified butter ) along with hot rice. It should be used with first bolus. The recommended dose should not exceed  1- 3 gms per day. This can be taken in devided doses. This should be strictly taken under medical suervision. People suffering from ulcers of digestive sytem must refrain from using this.

  1. Dry ginger powder – 1 tea spoon
  2. Long pepper powder (pippali) – 1 tea spoon
  3. Black pepper powder – 1 tea spoon
  4. Ajwain or carom seed powder – 1 tea spoon
  5. Rock salt or Sendha Namak – 1 tea spoon
  6. Cumin seed powder or jeera powder – 1 tea spoon
  7. Black cumin seed  or kala jeera powder – 1 tea spoon
  8. Pure asafoetida powder or hing powder – 1 tea spoon

Mix the above ingredients well. The prepared hingvashtak powder can be stored in an airtight jar and can be consumed as required. It can be stored for 6 months. Consume ¼ tea spoon of higvashtak churna with equal quantity of ghee before consuming food.  It is a boon for foodies who want to relish food without landing up in indigestion.

Hingwastak powder may cause exaggeration of piles in pregnant woman and may also cause acidity. Hence persons with hemorrhoids, peptic ulcer and pregnant ladies should use this under strict medical supervision.
