Ajwain leaves also known as ajwain ka patta has a name “parnayavani” in Ayurveda.  It belongs to Labiate family and has a botanical name Plectranthus amboinicus. It has different names in Indian local languages.

It is known as patta ajwain in hindi, patharchur in Bengali, paan owa in Marathi, ovapaan in gujarati, karpooravalli in tamil and doddapatre in kannada. It is Indian Borage in English.

It is a small shrub with soft stem and strong aromatic thick juicy leaves. Leaves are used in Indian cuisine and home remedies. They make dishes like chutney, tambli , raita etc. Its major chemical constituent is Carvacrol (53%–67%)

Kashaya or decoction of the leaves is used in many medicinal conditions like , cold, cough, congestion , bronchitis, sore throat , dysentery, diarrhoea, ibs etc. Various studies have pointed towards its effectiveness in kidney stones, Cystitis and UTI. It is also helpful in psychological disorders. It has anti-oxidant and antimicrobial property.

Ayurveda Medicinal Properties of Ajwain Leaves or Indian Borage

Ayurveda pharmacological properties of this plant are explained as follows

Indian borage or Plectranthus amboinicus is used in many home remedies for cough, cold, bronchitis etc. Texts of Ayurveda recommend these leaves in treatment of kidney stones, cystitis and UTI.It is lite (laghu) to digest and dries up moistness of tissues (rooksha) . It is very sharp in its medicinal qualities. Ajwain pan has pungent (katu rasa) and bitter (tikta rasa) tastes. These leaves increase body heat (ushna veerya). It balances vata dosha and kapha dosha. Usually juicy leaves are used for medicinal purpose.

Ajwain Leaves in Cough and Cold

This herb is highly recommended by ayurveda acharyas for cough, cold, bronchitis and asthma. This can be used in children and adults.

Collect few leaves of this plant and crush them to get 5 to 6 ml of juice. Mix this ayurvedic juice with 5 ml of honey and consume this, after food in morning. Repeat this in evening too.

You can also role 1 crystal of salt in 1 ajwain leaf and chew it slowly. But wash these leaves before using.

Ajwain Leaves for Babies

This can be administered for kids who are aged above 1 year. Wash 2 leaves of ajwain and squeeze 3 ml of juice. Mix this with 3 ml of honey and administer this twice daily for kids who have cough, cold and congestion in chest. You can also add 1 ml of ginger juice and few grains of rock salt or saindhava lavana for this.

Juice mixed with sugar can be given to children in colic, in asthma, chronic cough, kidney stones, piles and dysentery

Ayurveda acharyas recommend to apply juice of parnayavani,  on body when you have allergic rashes. You can also chew few leaves. During headaches it is applied on forehead. Its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties help to reduce headache and skin rashes.

Indian borage for hair

Indian borage is used to extract essential oil. This is used in hair oils. Due to its sharp penetrating quality , this herb helps in hair growth and prevent hair loss. It is also useful in dandruff and scalp acne as it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Paste of ajwain leaves or juice of ajwain leaves are administered orally to treat kidney stones. These leaves help to reduce inflammation and burning urination. Hence they are used in ayurvedic treatment for Cystitis and UTI.

Since this herb normalises kapha and vata, it can be used as best ayurvedic weight loss herb. This also has diuretic properties and help to remove excess water from body. It also sets right digestion. The leaves can be used in salads. It is considered as herb which promotes heart health.

Leaves of parnayavani. Are crushed and made to a paste. This paste has to be applied around eyes during conjunctivitis.

Apart from these ova pan is useful in diseases which arise due to vata imbalance like paralysis, seizures etc.
