About kokilaksha or talmakhana
Kokilakasha or Asteracantha Longifolia is a small thorny herb which grows to 2-4 feet height. The flowers are purple in colour and have orange streaks. The seeds of this plant are red in colour and when kept in mouth feel sticky and slippery. It usually grows in marshy areas where water is available. It can be found near ponds, paddy fields etc.
The plant is widely distributed throughout India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Malaysia and Nepal.
It has different names in different languages in India. It is known as
- Talmakhana in Hindi,
- Higrophila in English,
- Kulimakada or Kaatakalia in Bengali,
- Ekharo in Gujarati,
- Talimakhana in Marathi,
- Nirmuli , Golmidi in Tamil,
- Neergubbi in Telagu.
- Sanskrit: Iksura;
- Malyalam: Nirmuli;
- Kannada: Kulugolike
Ayurveda Health Benefits of Kokilaksha or Asteracantha Longifolia
Kokilaksha or Asteracantha longifolia is classified as ‘rasayana’ herb by Ayurveda acharya Charaka and Sushruta. Rsayana herbs are known to be effective in Ayurveda for the management of neurodegenerative diseases, as rejuvenators, immunomodulators, aphrodisiac and tonic. This herb is described in ayurvedic texts as Kokilaksha which means “having eyes like the Kokila or Indian Cuckoo“.
According to principles of ayurveda this plant is heavy to digest and improve moistness of tissues. It increases mucous secretion and acts as a binding agent. It tastes sweet (madhura rasa) and cold in potency (sheeta veerya). It tastes sweet even after digestion.
Effect on Doshas:
Usually seeds and roots of this plant are used for medicinal purpose in ayurveda.
In Gout and High uric acid in blood
Seeds of this plant effectively normalise vata. Since Vata controls nervous system, the seeds of kokilaksha are effective in nervous disorders like weakness of nerves. It is effective in vataraktha or Gout, since gout is caused due to vitiation of vata. The high uric acid level in blood is also a feature of vatarakta. Ayurvedic practitioners use this herb in other disease in which vitiation of vata is prominent.
In digestive disorders
Kokilaksha is very effective in diseases of digestive system. This plant stimulates, detoxifies Liver and normalises bowel movement. Hence roots of this plant are used in liver diseases like Jaundice, enlargement of liver and bloating due to constipation.
In Male Sexual Health Conditions:
Seeds of Kokilaksha are used in treatment of different types of impotence or claibya. This herb is used in various ayurvedic aphrodisiac preparations. Scientists opine that this herb has properties to strengthen the tissues of testis and boost testosterone level. This in turn helps to manage erectile dysfunction.
