About Hing or Asafoetida
Asafoetida resin of a plant rhizome is famous as hing in India and hingu in ayurveda. It is the dried gum, extracted from rhizome or tap root of plants belonging to Ferula species. Its botanical name is Ferula narthex / Ferula foetida / Ferula asafoetida
and from family Umbelliferae
Asafoetida or hing . It is mainly available in Iran, Afghanistan and cultivated in India. Its strong fetid odour is the reason for the name Asafoetida. It gives a pleasant flavour when cooked in dishes or when used in seasoning, for which even powdered form of hing can be used. It is also known as food of the gods, stinking gum and Devil’s dung.
This gum is known by many names in local languages of India and extensively used in Indian cuisine. It is known as Hing in hindi / bengali/ Marathi, Inguva in telagu, Ingu or Hingu in Kannada, perungayam in tamil and malayalam, badharani in gujarati.
Ayurvedic Medicinal Properties of Hing or Asafoetida
Texts of ayurveda refer this gum with many synonyms. It is called Hingu and Sahasravedhi as it can be used for medicinal purpose thousands of ways. It is also referred as Bahleeka (near punjab) and Ramatha (near jordan), as it was available in these places. It is named as Ugragandha for offensive odour.
Texts of ayurveda explain medicinal properties of hing as follows
Based on principles of Ayurveda, hing or asafoetida is light to digest (laghu) and has properties of deep tissue penetration (teekshna). It is hot or pungent to taste (katu rasa) and has hot potency. It balances kapha dosha and vata dosha. But it increases pitta dosha.
Ayurvedic Uses and Benefits of Hingu or Asafoetida
Ayurveda acharyas recommend hingu in many diseases. Since it increases pitta (pittavardhana) it is administered mainly in digestive problems . It is also recommended in disorders of nervous system as it has strong smell which stimulates sensory centres.
Uses in Digestive System Problems
This resin is praised for its properties of increasing appetite (deepaneeya), Reduces bloating and aids downward movement of gas accumulated in digestive system (anulomana), improves digestion (pachana),
Hing helps in indigestion, flatulence and bloating of stomach. Hence it is used in Indian cuisine to make the food easy for digestion. It promotes blood circulation.
For intestinal parasites:
Asafoetida is very useful in expulsion of intestinal parasites. It is administered in the form of enema along with water. Hence it is praised as Krimighna.
Ayurvedic medicines with hingu is recommended for constipation (vibandha). It helps to relieve colic (shula) and ease bowel movement.
For cough and Cold:
Hing balances kapha and vata. It also has property of inducing expectoration (chedaneeya) . Hence it is recommended in diseases of respiratory system. They recommend to massage this gum over chest to relieve chest congestion. It can be taken with warm water during cough and cold.
Improves Heart Health:
It improves blood cholesterol levels, penetrates through small blood vessels and clears it from clogs (teekshna and chedaneeya properties) and this helps to maintain heart health (hrudya). It also boost blood circulation and aids in management of high blood pressure.
For erectile Dysfunction:
Ayurveda acharyas recommend applying hing on male genital organ to increase hardness. Asafoetida can be used internally to increase blood circulation to male reproductive system and improve duration of erections. Since it helps in management of blood cholesterol , improves blood circulation, manages blood pressure, it helps as the best ayurvedic remedy for erectile dysfunction.
Asafoetida reduces inflammation of bladder and reduces pain in cystitis and UTI. Hence it is recommended along with buttermilk or water in burning micturition.
For women health:
Use of Asafoetida reduces menstrual cramps and helps in easy flow of menstrual blood. It helps to cleanse the uterus after delivery. It is also useful as ayurvedic remedy for weight loss after delivery. It can be used in ayurvedic remedy for PCOS to improve menstrual flow.
Hing helps to reduce fever.

Dosage of Hing:
Hing or Asafoetida powder has to be used in dose of 125 – 500 mg per day (in divided doses), or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
Precautions to be followed while using hing :
- Hing should be fried in pure ghee before administering in digestive system disorders .
- Raw hing has to be used in respiratory diseases.
- Hing has to be first dissolved in little water before using.
