Dandruff not only puts you in an odd position but also causes hair loss, itchy scalp and ugly flaking of scalp skin. These flakes fall on clothes causing embarrassment . Apart from this social problem , dandruff when falls on body skin can irritate skin to cause eruptions. It may also cause ugly acne and pimples. These skin lesions may get infected by skin bacteria and cause puss filled small boils which are itchy and painful.

Let us know what causes dandruff.

In a normal scalp skin the new cells of scalp skin push the older ones to the surface of scalp. The dead and old cells are shed almost in an invisible way. But in few conditions like dry skin, irritated oily skin, inappropriate shampooing, psoriasis, Eczema, sensitivity to hair products, fungus etc  , the process of replacing dead skin becomes unusually rapid and the dead cells are shed in form of dry flakes.  These flakes of dead skin are known as dandruff.

According to text books of ayurveda dandruff is caused due to vitiation of doshas like kapha and vayu. Vitiated vayu make the scalp skin dry and vitiated kapha causes itching of scalp. Thus dried scalp skin comes out in flakes and person experiences itching all over scalp. The treatment of dandruff involves normalising vitiated doshas and improving health of scalp skin externally and also internally. Externally it can be done by massaging scalp with anti dandruff ayurvedic hair oil which contains neem as major herb. Internally suitable measures have to be taken to detox skin. Ayurveda acharyas suggest very easy ayurveda home remedies for dandruff using herbs. The herb which is very effective and helps in controlling dandruff is neem . Neem is known as “Nimba” in ayurveda . Text books of ayurveda eulogise this herb as "krimighna" and "shotahara" which means the herb which has antimicrobial and anti-inflamatory properties. Neem due to these healing properties helps to control dandruff and also effectively reduces inflammation of scalp skin.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Dandruff with Neem Leaves

For Oily Hair : Collect two fists full of fresh neem leaves. Soak it in a cup of hot water. Leave it overnight. Next day blend this in mixer and apply it to scalp. Leave this for 20 minutes; wash it off with luke warm water. Repeat this twice in a week. This helps to control dandruff. This ayurvedic remedy helps to reduce dandruff, hair loss and increase the shine of hair.

For Dry Hair : Same as above take two fist full  of fresh neem leaves and a tea spoon of methi seeds or fenugreek seeds. Soak these in warm water overnight. Next day blend them together in a mixie to prepare a scalp mask. Apply this to scalp and wash it off after 20 minutes. Fenugreek seeds prevent drying of hair.

For Normal Hair : Mix 5 to 6 leaves of hibiscus leaves with two fists full of fresh neem leaves. Soak these in normal water overnight. Blend them in mixie jar and apply the pack on scalp. Wash this off after 20 minutes.

If fresh neem leaves are not available you can use neem powder instead. While using neem powder do not soak the powder overnight as we lose its essential molecules. Blend it directly with other ingredients like methi or hibiscus leaves.
