Dandruff in Ayurveda
Various anti dandruff products are flooding market confusing consumers. Few simple home remedies definitely help to control dandruff without using chemicals laden hair products. This article explains few home remedies for dandruff using neem leaves.
What is Dandruff ?
In normal conditions the new cells of scalp skin push the older ones to the surface of scalp. The dead and old cells are shed almost in an invisible way. But in few conditions this process becomes unusually rapid and the dead cells are shed in form of dry flakes.
These flakes collectively constitute what we call dandruff.
Side Effects of Dandruff
Dandruff not only puts you in an odd position but also causes hair loss itchy , dry and flaky scalp and ugly flaking of scalp skin. These flakes fall on clothes causing embarrassment . Apart from this social problem , dandruff when falls on body skin can irritate skin to cause eruptions. It may also cause ugly acne and pimples. These skin lesions may get infected by skin bacteria and cause puss filled small boils which are itchy and painful.
Dandruff causes hair fall or hair loss, itching in scalp, acne, pimples and recurrent infection of facial skin.
Dandruff and Ayurveda
According to dosha theory of ayurveda, dandruff is caused by vitiation of vata dosha and kapha dosha of scalp. Vitiated kapha and vayu make the scalp skin dry. Vitiated kapha causes itching of scalp. Thus dried scalp skin comes out in flakes.
Ayurveda has recommended many herbal formulations and remedies for dandruff. These ayurvedic herbal remedies for dandruff are very effective.
Causes of Dandruff and Hair Fall

According to text books of ayurveda dandruff is caused due to vitiation of doshas like kapha and vayu. Vitiated vayu make the scalp skin dry and vitiated kapha causes itching of scalp. Thus dried scalp skin comes out in flakes and person experiences itching all over scalp.
The probable causes for dandruff are:
- ill maintained scalp.
- Hypersensitivity to dust, smoke, shampoos etc
- Hormonal imbalance.
- Improper nourishment leading to poor health.
- Mental stress.
- Hair colors, curlers hot hair curlers etc.
- Harsh shampoos.
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions.
Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Dandruff
.The treatment of dandruff involves normalising vitiated doshas and improving health of scalp skin externally and also internally. Externally it can be done by massaging scalp with anti dandruff ayurvedic hair oil which contains neem as major herb. Internally suitable measures have to be taken to detox skin. Self Care for dandruff:
- Do not scratch or brush the scalp too hard.
- Brush hair gently before washing scalp and hair.
- Keep the scalp clean by washing it thrice in a week.
- Cover your scalp with a scarf or hat to prevent it from extreme weather conditions.
- Manage stress with relaxation techniques like Yoga and Meditation.
- Prevent excess oil accumulation on scalp.
- Avoid hair style accessories like blow dryers, gels, sprays and harsh colors.
- Eat healthy nourishing food.
- Avoid greasy, sweet and oily food.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Dandruff Using Neem Leaves
Ayurveda acharyas suggest very easy ayurveda home remedies for dandruff using herbs. The herb which is very effective and helps in controlling dandruff is neem . Neem is known as “Nimba” in ayurveda . Text books of ayurveda eulogise this herb as “krimighna” and “shotahara” which means the herb which has antimicrobial and anti-inflamatory properties. Neem due to these healing properties helps to control dandruff and also effectively reduces inflammation of scalp skin.
For Oily Hair :
Collect two fists full of fresh neem leaves. Soak it in a cup of hot water. Leave it overnight. Next day blend this in mixer . Add a tea spoon of lemon juice to this and apply to scalp. Leave this for 20 minutes; wash it off with luke warm water. Repeat this twice in a week. This helps to control dandruff. This ayurvedic remedy helps to reduce dandruff, hair loss and increase the shine of hair.
For Dry Hair :
Same as above take two fist full of fresh neem leaves and a tea spoon of methi seeds or fenugreek seeds. Soak these in warm water overnight. Next day blend them together in a mixie to prepare a scalp mask. Apply this to scalp and wash it off after 20 minutes. Fenugreek seeds prevent drying of hair.
For Normal Hair :
Mix 5 to 6 leaves of hibiscus leaves with two fists full of fresh neem leaves. Soak these in normal water overnight. Blend them in mixie jar and apply the pack on scalp. Wash this off after 20 minutes.
If fresh neem leaves are not available you can use neem powder instead. While using neem powder do not soak the powder overnight as we lose its essential molecules. Blend it directly with other ingredients like methi or hibiscus leaves.
Ayurvedic home remedies and treatment for dandruff with Neem Oil
Neem oil is rich in fatty acids, limonoids, vitamin E, triglycerides, antioxidants and calcium. when you apply neem oil on scalp all its nutrients get absorbed and this effectively reduces dandruff, scalp acne and lice.
How to prepare neem hair oil for dandruff and hair loss ?
Neem Oil should not be applied directly on scalp. It has to be diluted with carrier oils like coconut oil or sesame oil. Add 5 to 6 drops of neem oil to 15 ml of carrier oil. Massage this on scalp. Leave it for an hour and wash it off with suitable shampoo.Topical application of this oil results in healthier hair.Some may feel irritation of scalp with neem oil.
