About stretch marks in pregnancy

Almost all women develop stretch marks during pregnancy. These may appear on abdomen, hips, breasts  and thighs. In medical terms these are known as striae gravidarum . The intensity and colour of these marks depend on skin colour of individual. But in all cases these marks are in contrast with surrounding skin colour.

Causes of stretch marks in pregnancy

Women usually develop stretch marks during pregnancy. The stretch marks appear due to sudden stretching of skin surface. These are small tears of skin which happen in skin tissue to help skin to stretch as belly expands. During this process separation or tearing of skin collagen happens. Mostly these appear in last trimester of pregnancy. The genetic factors play a big role in appearance of these marks. The stretch marks appear on stomach, breasts and thighs. The color of these marks can start as pink progress to reddish brown, brown or dark brown. Over a long period of time they acquire silvery grey. These color changes depend upon the color of skin. The stretch marks even though can not be completely cured; at least they can be minimized.

These are not harmful or painful. But they may itch.

Who are Prone to Pregnancy Stretch Marks ?

Appearance of stretch marks in pregnancy depends on many factors. It depends on the following factors.

  1. The elasticity of skin, which is genetically determined. If mother gets stretch marks then the probabilities of daughter getting these are more.
  2. There is a limit for stretching of skin. Obesity makes the stretch marks worst.
  3. Multiple pregnancies leads to more stretch marks than single pregnancy.
  4. If stretch marks show up during puberty then chances of getting these during pregnancy are more.
  5. Stretch marks will be prominent if , weight gained during pregnancy is not reduced.

Texts of ayurveda mention stretch marks as “Kikkwisa”. Ayurveda acharyas mention about these marks and remedies for this. They recommend anti-stretch marks creams and oils for external application.

Ayurvedic Oils

Ayurvedic oils are very useful in this condition. The best oils are

Kumkumadi Tailam-

Ksheerabala Oil

Mix 1/2 tea spoon of turmeric in two tea spoons of ksheerabala oil. Massage this oil on marks twice daily. Wash it off with ayurvedic body scrub. Ksheerabala has sesame oil as base oil and processed with milk and Herb Bala (sida Cordifolia). Sesame oil is highly eulogised for its skin healing properties.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is another best remedy for this condition. Warm coconut oil and mix it with a pinch of turmeric and manjishta powder. Lightly massage this on abdomen.

Castor Oil

Castor oil has immense medicinal properties. It not only helps to reduce marks but also improves skin health. Warm castor oil with a pinch of turmeric and apply this over abdomen.

Avoid Scratching

Ayurveda acharyas recommend , preventing scratching the stretch marks as it causes scarring. If you feel itching sensations on these marks rub lightly with soft cotton cloth or cotton balls. Massaging abdomen very lightly with ksheerabala oil helps to reduce, itching, dryness of skin and striae gravidarum.

Ayurvedic Tips to Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks

The severity of stretch marks can be reduced or minimized by taking preventive measures as early as possible. Here are few tips to prevent stretch marks.

Apply moisturiser or ayurvedic oil

Apply plenty of moisturizing lotion at repeated intervals of time.(Dermatologists recommend application of moisturizer at least 4 times daily). Select a moisturizer which is rich in natural ingredients. Avoid moisturizer which contains harsh chemicals.

Drink Water

Drink plenty of water to keep the skin well hydrated. Well hydrated skin has more elasticity.

Follow Ayurvedic Diet

Follow an ayurveda diet which include fresh vegetables and fruits which are rich in Vitamins (E and C) and minerals (silica and zinc).

Exercise Regularly

Always chose mild type of exercises. Consult your gynecologist before starting any exercise routine during pregnancy. Walking in moderate pace is best exercise.

Watch your weight

Check your weight. Any abnormal weight gain can exaggerate appearance of stretch marks.
