What Ayurveda says about wrinkles on Face, Neck and Skin ?

Wrinkling is a natural process of the skin as we age (old age is known as Jara in ayurveda) . Skin starts wrinkling because it loses the moisture and the elasticity that was helping it stay soft, firm and wrinkle free. Once you reach the age of 30 and above, you will start noticing definite changes in the way your skin feels and looks.

According to principles of ayurveda increased vata or imbalanced vata dosha leads to fast ageing, drying of skin and less moisture in skin. This leads to appearance of wrinkles on skin.

Let us Know about Normal Skin before analyzing the skin with wrinkles.

The skin is made up of 3 layers – the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue.

Epidermis

The epidermis is the outer layer .The cells of the epidermis, move from the bottom layer of the epidermis to the top layer. Epidermis acts as a protective layer to external environment. As the cells reach the top layer they flake off.

Dermis

The second layer dermis, contains the connective tissues which are the structural elements of the skin. These tissues give skin the strength (collagen fibres), turgor , elasticity (elastin) etc. The cells of the epidermis receive their nutrients from the blood vessels in the dermis.

Subcutaneous tissue

Below dermis is the subcutaneous tissue containing fat cells. These fat cells act as insulation to the body. The skin looks plumpy due to fat cells.

Due to innumerable causes changes occur in dermis and epidermis .This leads to formation of wrinkles.

Causes of Wrinkles

There are several factors that can affect health of your skin. The factors range from lack of skin care, climate, and exposure to sun rays, nutritional factor, hygiene, genetic factors, etc. Skin is delicate and highly exposed to any risks that we come across throughout the day. This is why we need to maintain and clean the skin regularly.

The epidermal cells become thinner as age advances .They also lose their stickiness. This change in epidermal cells allows the moisture to escape instead of retaining it back causing dryness of the skin. As we get old the epidermal cells start dividing slowly and the rate of repairing process also retards. Thus thinning of skin leads to wrinkles

Changes in dermis which leads to wrinkles:

  • The collagen fiber production reduces.
  • The elastin fibers wear out.
  • The production of sebum from sebaceous glands decreases.
  • there will be a decrease in number of sweat glands.
  • The supply of nutrients also decreases.

Changes in subcutaneous tissues.

  • The fat cells get smaller with age.
  • All these changes in three layers of skin lead to wrinkles and sagging.

The factors that cause early aging and formation of wrinkles

Sun :

Constant exposure to U-V radiations from sun cause premature aging of skin. Due to constant exposure to sun the epidermis becomes thin and many harm full lesions like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas occur. Sun light also damages collagen fibers of dermis causing early aging. Increased sun light causes dryness and imbalances vata.

Hormones

The hormonal changes due to menopause or decreased estrogen production may lead to changes in skin. Few conditions like PCOS or PCOD can also cause hormonal imbalance which can lead to wrinkles.

Gravity and constant frowning cause wrinkles.

Skin care changes from season to season; however, most common factor in all types of climatic conditions is that the skin will lose moisture whether it is the summer or the winter. Therefore, if you want to maintain the texture and softness of your skin it is necessary to moisturize your skin from outside and the inside. For this follow these routines.

  2. After bath apply oil based moisturiser cream or lotion regularly.

First step in skin care to avoid wrinkles is moisturizing and hydrating. Moisturizing and hydrating of the skin are the same thing. However, your choice of moisturizers should change according the to season. In winter you should use something thicker as a moisturizer this can be the cold cream. However, during summer, your skin is going to be sweaty, it can also get dirty faster, therefore use a moisturizer which is absorbed quickly by the skin and is thinner.

Healthy skin requires a chance to survive rigors of daily life; therefore, you should make it easier for skin instead of making it harder. Following Ayurvedic Daily Routine or Dinacharya and Seasonal routine or “Rutucharya” helps to keep skin look young and wrinkle free.  Regular exercise is also very important to keep skin healthy.

Watch your bath and body products

Be careful while making a choice of regular products like the bathing soaps and shampoos. These products should be chosen depending on quality, skin type, seasonal suitability and ingredients. As more and more studies are being made, it is being found out that instead of chemical products, natural products not just cleanse skin, these are also able to protect the Ph balance of skin.
