Glimpses of research on Neem

The antibacterial property of neem is supported by scientific studies. Studies have shown that Azadirachta indica leaf inhibits growth and destroys certain bacterial strains that cause skin infections. (Gajanan M. “Antibacterial Activity of Azadirachta indica Juss, Leaves Extracts Against Skin Pathogens.” Int J of Recent Trends in Science and Technology.2012).

Studies have shown that Neem bark extract helps in obstructing the herpes simplex virus from entering the healthy cells, thereby inhibiting progression of the viral infection and supporting recovery. (Tiwari V et al. “In vitro antiviral activity of neem (Azardirachta indica L) bark extract against herpes simplex virus type-1 infection.” Phytother Res. 2010 Aug).

In a study, researchers found that neem helps in increasing glucose tolerance in diabetic animals. Apart from reducing the elevated glucose level in the blood, it also helps in decreasing the lipid, urea and creatinine levels in the blood. (Shravan KD et al, “In vivo Antidiabetic evaluation of Neem leaf extract in alloxan induced rats.” J. of Applies Pharmaceutical Science. 2011).

Researchers have found that neem bark extract helps in reducing excess secretion of stomach acid, thereby facilitating healing of gastroduodenal ulcer. (Bandopadhyay U et al, “Clinical studies on the effect of neem (Azadirachta indica) bark extract on gastric secretion and gastroduodenal ulcer.” Life Sci. 2004).
