Why do we need ayurvedic skin detox?

Everyone loves to have clean, clear, glowing, young-looking skin. The skin protects the body from harmful elements of the environment. It is constantly exposed to external pollutants, radiation, and injuries. Skin is not only abused by environmental pollutants but internal metabolic wastes also pose a threat to its health.

Skin is the largest organ of our body. Texts of Ayurveda explain the various ayurvedic processes to detox skin and cleanse it. Panchakarma is an ayurvedic detox therapy. The ayurvedic skin detox can be done at home to expel toxins from the skin and keep it healthy and glowing naturally. Let us know how to detoxify skin naturally at home.

The skin protects our internal organs from all external hazards. Hence utmost care has to be given to keep our skin healthy. Healthy glowing skin is an indication of a healthy body and mind.

Fair, healthy, and glowing skin attracts everybody’s attention. Ayurveda has many solutions to have fair, healthy, and glowing skin. According to Ayurveda skin has seven layers. When imbalanced doshas affect these layers different types of skin diseases arise. Doshas may get imbalanced in the body and locally on the skin.

Vata dosha is dominant in the skin. The qualities of Vata dosha are Cold, Light, Dry, Rough, Hard, and Mobility. When Vata dosha gets aggravated the skin becomes dry, cracked, rough, dark, dull, lifeless, fissured, and scaly. Vata dosha is the only dosha that has the capacity to move in nuke and corner of the body and also has a deeper penetrating power. Vata, when get imbalanced vitiates other to doshas i.e pitta and Kapha.

For healthier skin, the vata should be always in normal balanced condition. The balanced Vata keeps all other tissues and the remaining two doshas in healthy condition. The imbalanced Vata vitiates the tissues of the skin and leads to numerous skin problems.

When Vata vitiates pitta the skin will get rashes, burning sensation, eruptions, and other allergic manifestations. The sweat will have a bad odor. When Kapha gets vitiated due to imbalanced Vata, oil secretion increases, acne and pimples erupt. The skin becomes dull and lusterless.

It is very important to know that the metabolism of skin is directly dependent on body metabolism. According to Ayurveda acharyas, Agni or fire element rules the process of metabolism.  Balancing agni helps to balance the metabolism of both body and skin.

The above factors affect the glow and looks of the skin. To maintain the health of the skin it is necessary to detoxify it regularly. Texts of Ayurveda recommend some simple skin detoxifying steps, which can be incorporated into our daily routine. These routines also help to detox the body and use as a detox for men too.

Ayurvedic Detox Food and Diet at Home

Strictly say no to junk foods, sugar, and processed foods. Include seasonal veggies and fruits in your menu. Include spices like turmeric, Cumin seeds (jeera), garlic, etc in your diet. Use fresh lemon regularly. These ingredients help to detox liver and skin

Bitter Foods

Include Tikta rasa or bitter-tasting foods in your diet. Make it a point to eat bitter gourd and methi leaves (fenugreek leaves) once a week. Drink turmeric milk at night. These foods detoxify not only the skin but also expel toxins from the liver.

Ayurvedic Medicine and Herbs for Glowing and Fair Skin

Natural herbs like neem, Guduchi or Giloy, turmeric, amla, Sariva, or Anantmool (hemidesmus indicus) can be used. These can be grown at home or procured from surroundings. These not only help to detox the body and skin but also help to rejuvenate the skin tissue.

Scrub Body Skin

It is very essential to remove dead skin cells. Scrubbing removes dead skin cells and also improves blood circulation. The ayurvedic way to cleanse the skin is by using herbal ingredients to scrub. Use gram flour or besan twice a week to scrub the body’s skin. Mix two teaspoons of besan or gram flour with ¼ cup of grated cucumber. Scrub the body with this mix applying gentle pressure.

Scrub your body skin with natural scrubs like oatmeal scrub or tomato sugar scrub. This removes dead skin and opens up clogged pores. People who lack time to use natural scrubs can make use of soft body brushes to scrub their bodies. Start scrubbing or brushing soles and move up. Avoid nipple area.  Use smooth circular motions to stimulate the skin. Do not scrub vigorously as this may damage the skin.

Oil Massage for Body Skin

Abhyanga or oil massage is a very effective ayurvedic therapy to keep skin healthy. Massaging the body with warm sesame oil or coconut oil helps to increase skin and body metabolism. This therapy rejuvenates the body, checks drying of the skin, reduces stress and anxiety levels, prevents early aging, and balances doshas. A good massage increases blood flow and enhances oxygen absorption. Enjoy a relaxing oil massage on weekends.

Massage the whole body once a week with warm sesame oil or coconut oil. Body massage with oil improves skin texture and prevents drying of the skin. This process enhances skin glow and works as an anti-aging therapy. You can also use ksheerabala oil

Liberally apply a good moisturizer all over the body irrespective of the season. Moisturizers help to keep skin conditions like dry skin and psoriasis at bay.

Skin Detox Body Pack for Skin Cleansing:

Texts of Ayurveda recommend various detoxifying body packs. But a healthy body pack can be made at home using kitchen ingredients. Wash and soak green gram or whole moong (1/4 cup ) and 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds (methi) overnight. The next day blend these two in a clean jar to a smooth paste. Other Ayurvedic Routines for Skin Detox

Exercise the Best Ayurveda Skin Detox :

Ayurveda recommends Vayama or exercises as the best detoxification process. Regular exercises help us to sweat out. Sweat brings out toxins and removes clogs accumulated in skin pores. A daily brisk walk for 45 minutes helps in a great way to detoxify skin. .Once again exercise is the easy and best remedy for weight loss also.

Never exercise when your stomach is full. Avoid drinking cold water immediately after an exhaustive workout.

Practice yoga and meditation. A simple deep breathing exercise or pranayama for 20 minutes gives excellent results within 2 weeks.

Sunrays are hazardous for the skin. Exposure to harsh sun rays can lead to the appearance of wrinkles at an early age. Hence always protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

Avoid taking hot showers or dipping in hot water bathtubs. Hot water can strip off natural oils from skin.

Do Not Suppress Natural Urges

Do not suppress natural urges like defecation, urination, belching, yawning, sneezing etc.  Suppression of natural urges vitiates doshas and throws metabolism off balance.

Sleep Well

Good sleep is good for the skin too. Sleep well for long hours (6-7 hours).  Sleeping in day time harms metabolism. Follow the principle- early to bed and early to rise. Insomnia leads to early ageing of skin (read ayurvedic treatment for insomnia)

Keep addictions at bay

Quit smoking, alcohol, and drugs. Smoking accelerates the aging of the skin and smokers are more wrinkle-prone than nonsmokers.

Keep Chemicals at Bay to keep skin healthy:

Use cosmetics sparingly. Do not forget to remove makeup before going to bed.

Let your skin bask in the glory of nature. Happy skin detox.
