Watermelon – An Ayurveda View

The botanical Name of this fruit is  Citrullus lanatus. It belongs to Family Curcurbitaceae. Ayurveda eulogizes this fruit as

Various ayurvedic texts describe the medicinal properties of this fruit.

Ripe fruit properties

It tastes sweet (madhura rasa) and increases body heat (ushna veerya) and is alkaline in nature (kshara) . It balances kapha dosha and Vata dosha but increases pitta dosha. Ripe fruit nourishes all seven dhatu (santharpana and Pushti vardhana), boosts strength (balya), enhances sexual energy and stamina (vrushya), increases fertility in men (veerya vardhana), Reduces burning sensation (daha) and thirst (trushna), and relieves fatigue (shramapaha).

Unripe fruit properties

When this fruit is unripe, it is not recommended for many health conditions. Even though it acts as a body coolant (sheeta veerya) , it is heavy to digest. It harms the health of the eye and reduces shukra dhatu (shukrarth). It absorbs the moistness of tissues (grahi). It balances pitta dosha.

Seeds Benefits

Seeds of watermelon act as the best body coolants and increase urine output ( diuretic or mutrala). It nourishes body tissues (Pushti vardhana).  Ayurveda vaidyas recommend these seeds in cystitis and uti.

The oil extracted from the seeds of this fruit contains glycerides of linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic and stearic acids. Hence this is used in ayurvedic hair oil and in ayurvedic oils for skin. They nourish, moisturize and boost the health of hair and skin. This oil can be used in Ayurvedic treatment and home remedies for dry skin, dry flaky scalp and hair home remedies, psoriasis, and wrinkles.

Flowers are the best body coolants and soothe inflamed urinary tract and bladder. They are used in various home remedies.

Watermelon for Erectile Dysfunction

According to the principles of Ayurveda this fruit nourishes body tissues, especially shukra dhatu . Healthy shukra dhatu helps to increase sexual energy, stamina, and fertility in men. It also helps to boost testosterone levels.

Researchers and scientists say that this fruit is a rich source of an amino acid called citrulline. Citrulline gets converted to arginine. Arginine is a precursor for nitric oxide which dilates blood vessels.  Thus dilated blood vessels increase blood flow to injured tissues and hasten the healing process.  This property also helps men who suffer from klaibya or erectile dysfunction.  When consumed regularly, this fruit helps men as a remedy for erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation .

But one word of precaution, always use ripe fruit pulp (without rind) and never use unripe fruit as it reduces sperm count and motility. Antioxidants are another treasure that we can harness from this fruit. These antioxidants help to reduce inflammation and eliminate body toxins (ama), which in turn boost sperm health. This fruit reduces acidity and provides an alkaline environment to body tissues which helps to optimize their functions.

Watermelon for PCOS and Obesity

This fruit is the best food for PCOS. Instead of pulp, using its rind is more beneficial. The rind also contains citrulline which transforms in the body and helps to boost fat loss, increase the sensitivity of cells to insulin and also increase body stamina to perform more physical exercise. It also helps to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure and also eliminates body toxins. The fibers in the rind help to prevent food cravings and control appetite. Home remedies with watermelon

In summer drink a glass of watermelon juice daily with a dash of rock salt (sendha namak) and cumin (jeera) powder.  This quenches thirst, and replenishes water and salts which we have lost through sweat.  Thus maintaining water-electrolyte balance. This drink also acts as the best ayurvedic skin detox at home. It also increases urine output, and reduces inflammation of the urinary tract.

Eat a bowl full of watermelon pulp before breakfast and lunch.  The fiber content of this fruit fills the stomach and satiates hunger signals. Thus the consumption of a regular diet reduces and helps towards achieving weight loss.

Wash the face thoroughly with soap or face wash. Pat dry the skin and apply watermelon juice evenly on the skin. Wash it off after 20 minutes. The beneficial constituents of this juice help to close skin pores, heal acne- pimples, and repair skin that is damaged due to sun rays.
