Horse Gram Recipes for Weight Loss and Obesity


Horse gram is known as kulatha in ayurveda. Based on principles of ayurveda this bean helps to control obesity and aids in weight loss. It is also very good for diabetes to keep fluctuating blood sugar level under control. Here are a few recipes of horse gram that help you to know how to use and take horse gram in your diet.

Horse Gram Soup Powder

Take 2 cups of horse gram and dry roast it till the raw flavor is gone. Allow the roasted bean to cool. Powder the roasted beans in a mixer. Store it in an airtight container. This can be used to prepare soups.

Horse Gram Soup for weight loss:

Ingredients : (Serves two)

  1. Powdered roasted horse gram –  one and a half tablespoon
  2. Water – one and a half cups ( 400 ml)
  3. One small onion – finely chopped
  4. 4 cloves of garlic – crushed.
  5. ½ inch ginger–grated
  6. Ghee – 1 teaspoon
  7. 5-6 peppercorns – crushed
  8. Coriander leaves –  ½ tablespoon
  9. Coconut milk – ¼ cup (Optional)
  10. Rock Salt or Sendha namak to taste

Heat ghee in a wok add onions and fry till they become transparent. Add garlic and ginger fry till they lose rawness. Add water and bring it to a boil. Add Horse gram powder and stir well till it is cooked. Do not allow it to form lumps. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and coriander leaves.  Garnish with coconut milk and serve.

This Horse Gram Soup Recipe is best to lose weight and can be used before lunch. It almost fills the stomach, reduces hunger pangs, and prevents craving.

Sprouted Horse Gram Usali or Salad :

The nutritional contents of these beans, like very little carbohydrate, more protein, and fiber, contribute to weight loss

Ingredients :

Horse Gram – 1 cup

Onion – 1 large finely chopped

Coriander leaves – finely chopped 1 tablespoon

Grated coconut – ¼ cup (Read Count on Coconut  )

Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon

Water – Quantity sufficient

For Seasoning

Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon

Urad dal or Black Gram – ½ teaspoon

Chana dal – ½ teaspoon

Curry Leaves – 9 to 10

Green Chilli – 2 – finely chopped

Asafoetida or hing – 1 pinch

Cooking oil – 3 teaspoon

Wash and soak horse gram for 8 hours. Discard the water and place it in a colander or Chalni for 30 minutes to remove residual water. After this tie the beans in a clean muslin cloth and hang it in a dark place for 12 hours. This process makes the kulthi to sprout.

Pressure cook sprouts in 4 cups of water with a little salt. Separate cooked beans from water. (This water can be used in curries and soups.).

Heat a wok with cooking oil in it.  Add mustard seeds. When they splutter add urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves, green chillies, and asafoetida. Roast them well. Add Chopped onions and fry till the raw smell is gone. Now add cooked sprouts and coconut gratings. Turn all these ingredients so that everything gets mixed evenly. Turn off the flame and add lemon juice. Garnish this with coriander leaves before serving.

This Horse gram recipe helps in weight loss and can be eaten with rotis and rice. It can be eaten as a healthy snack. This is very low in calories and satiates hunger.

Horse Gram Curry using horse gram water :

Ingredients:

Horse gram – 1 cup

Grated coconut – 1 cup

MTR Rasam Powder – 3 teaspoon

Tamarind paste – 3 teaspoons

Jaggery – 1 teaspoon

Curry leaves – 8-10

Coriander leaves – ½  tablespoon

Cumin seeds or Jeera – ½  teaspoon

Coriander seeds or dhania seeds – ½  teaspoon

Turmeric – ¼ teaspoon

Salt to taste

For seasoning

Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon

Dry Red chilli – 2 broken

Ghee – 1 teaspoon

Asafoetida – 1 pinch

Soak horse gram overnight. The next day discard the water used for soaking. Wash the soaked horse gram and pressure cook it for 5 whistles with a little salt and 4 cups of water.

Grind grated coconut, rasam powder, coriander seeds (dhania), cumin seeds, turmeric along with one tablespoon of cooked horse gram along with little water to make a fine paste. Add this to cooked kulthi beans and adjust the consistency by adding water. Boil till the raw smell of masala goes. Now add tamarind paste, salt, curry leaves, finely chopped coriander leaves, and jaggery. Boil for 3 more minutes.  Turn off the flame.

Heat ghee in a  small tadka pan, add mustard. When it splutters add red chillies and asafoetida. Turn off the flame and pour this on prepared curry. This curry goes well with rice or ragi ball.  Savoring this with ragi ball help to lose weight fast as these stay in the stomach for a very long duration.

Horse gram nutritional value

These beans are rich in nutrients. They contain plenty of calcium, phosphorous, iron, and protein. By virtue of its nutrients and ayurvedic natural properties, the horse gram is considered to be beneficial to human and animal health.

100 grams of dry horse gram beans contain 57.2% of carbohydrate, 22% protein, 5.3% dietary fiber, 0.5% fat, 287 mg calcium, 311 mg phosphorus, 6.77 mg iron.

Horse Gram Protein :

Horse gram contains high protein. 22% of this bean is protein. Hence this is recommended for a weight loss diet. Low-fat content in this bean makes it a favorable protein supplement for vegans and vegetarians. Usually, this bean is included in the diet of bodybuilders in rural India as it is cheap and easily affordable. This bean is fed to racehorses for its high protein content and it also prevents horses from gaining weight. Due to its high protein content, horse gram is strictly forbidden in the Ayurvedic diet for gout or high uric acid.
