Helps to Improve Stamina and Energy in Men

Ayurveda acharyas eulogize the benefits of this herb in males. This wonder herb is a very good rasayana or a plant with rejuvenating properties. It nourishes the whole body and increases rasa dhatu. When rasa dhatu is nourished, the successive dhatus also get nourished. Ayurveda vaidyas also laud this herb as vrushya or aphrodisiac. When this herb is used regularly, it helps to overcome erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, increases libido , sexual energy, and stamina in men. Research shows that the four compounds namely puerarin, daidzein, biochanin-A, and formononetin of this herb possess an androgenic effect and they significantly increased sexual behaviour and hormones level. ( 1 ).

For sexual disorders in men, this is used along with shilajit, ashwagandha, gokshura (tribulus), Kapikacchu (mucuna), Safed musli, shatavari etc.

It is eulogized as Shukrada owing to its, sweet, cool, and sticky properties, this herb helps to increase shukra dhatu and the quality and quantity of semen.  This leads to an increase in sperm count and motility. Acharyas praise this herb as Brimhani . It helps in weight gain in persons who have lost weight due to diseases or malnourishment. This herb increases healthy body weight (brumhana). This herb rejuvenates the whole body and increases muscle bulk (mamsa dhatu) . This is very helpful for people who are underweight and willing to increase their body bulk. Vidari also strengthens the immune system and boosts immunity. Hence this herb is used in brumhana therapy or weight gain therapy. Research showed, “statistically significant results for weight and chest circumference, whereas highly significant results were obtained for muscular strength and endurance assessment parameters (Push-up Test, Sit-up Test, and Hand Grip Strength Test).  Results were significant for cardio-respiratory parameters (Resting Heart Rate, Resting Respiratory Rate, and Harvard Step Test).” ( 3 )

Relieves Constipation

This herb is appreciated for normalizing Vata dosha (Pavana hanthi) and controlling vitiation. Hence it helps in relieving constipation. (Vata vitiation causes constipation). This tuber reduces dryness of the body and eases bowel movement. This herb increases the bulk of stools and improves the motility of the intestines. It also reduces the dryness of the body and digestive system. This eases bowel movement and relieves constipation. Since this tuber is vrushya it helps in erectile dysfunction which arises due to constipation.

Improves Skin Health

This herb is eulogized as varna vardhana (improves skin complexion and glow). Consumption of this herb rejuvenates skin and increases fairness and glow. It slows down the aging process of the body and skin and brings young looks. It is widely used in diseases of the skin that cause discoloration. As it increases moisture levels of the skin it helps in dry skin conditions.

Helps Singers

This herb helps to sharpen the voice and in modulating voice. Hence it is called swarya (the herb which strengthens vocal cords). Singers and teachers who abuse their vocal cords are benefited from this herb. It helps to restore the voice.

Increases Breast Milk

Vidarikanda is appreciated as sthanya in texts of Ayurveda. It acts as a galactagogue and is very useful for nursing mothers by increasing the quality and quantity of breast milk.

Useful Cystitis and UTI

Vidari is appreciated as mutrala (diuretic). It increases urine output and also soothes the inner layers of the bladder. Hence its use is highly appreciated in Cystitis and UTI.

About the plant

Pueraria tuberosa or Vidarikanda (in Sanskrit ) belongs to the family of Fabaceae. It is a perennial woody climber and has huge tuberous roots. A fully grown plant measures 5-6 meters in height. This plant bears white flowers with pink shade. It is mainly found in India, Nepal, and Pakistan. It is popularly known as Indian Kudzu.

In the Ayurveda system of medicine, its roots are used for medicinal purposes. The roots contain Steroids, Sugars, Amino acids, and Sterols. Researchers have evaluated the antimicrobial properties of this plant.

Vidarikand or Pueraria tuberosa / Indian Kudzu in ayurveda

According to the texts of Ayurveda, Vidarikanda is heavy to digest (guru) and increases the moisture level of tissues (snigdha) and the stickiness of secretions. It is sweet to taste (madhura rasa) and this taste remains in all stages of digestion. It has tremendous cooling properties (sheeta veerya). Due to these properties, it alleviates pitta dosha and Vata dosha . and normalizes Kapha dosha.
