Moringa seeds are not for erectile dysfunction (Avrishyam ):

Ayurveda acharyas say that fully matured Seeds of this plant can reduce the potency of men. They are not aphrodisiacs and do not help with erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation. Hence Ayurveda acharyas do not recommend matured seeds in conditions like klaibya or erectile dysfunction and low sperm count and low sperm motility.

Fruit pulp boosts sexual function

Fruit pulp helps men to fight erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. The fruit pulp is also recommended for male fertility to improve sperm count and motility.

Drumstick or moringa to increase sperm count:

Recent research has shown that the fruit has the medicinal property to increase sperm count and motility. But leaves are not so effective in boosting male fertility. Ayurveda never recommends this herb to increase fertility in males.

Moringa seeds for eye health (Chakshushyam) :

The seeds of this plant help to boost the health of the eye. Kajal is popular in India. It is applied like eyeliner to enhance the beauty of the eyes and is also used for medicinal purposes. Kajal prepared from the seeds of this plant is used in many diseases of the eye. Studies show that this plant has excellent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Hence the application of this helps to reduce the swelling of the eyes and prevent eye infections.

Seeds Help to nullify poison (Vishanashanm):

Texts of Ayurveda recommend the use of drumstick seeds when a person is poisoned. Botanists appreciate the antioxidant properties of these seeds and leaves. Hence they detoxify the body and expel toxins. It is a good Ayurveda detox herb.

Balances Kapha and Vata (Kaphavataghnam) :

Drumstick seeds alleviate Vata and Kapha. Hence oil prepared from these seeds is used in ayurvedic treatments for paralysis and nervine disorders.

Relieves Headache (Shiroarthihatam) :

Dried and finely powdered seeds are very effective in headaches. They have to be inhaled during nasyakarma.

Moringa or Drumsticks in Ayurveda

This plant has a Botanical name Moringa oleifera. It belongs to moringaceae family. It is known as Sahajin or Munaga in hindi, Murungai in tamil, munagakayi in telugu, nuggekaayi in kannada and Drumsticks or Moringa in English.

Ayurveda Medicinal properties of Moringa

This plant is known as “shobhanjana” or “shigru” in  Ayurveda. The texts of Ayurveda explain many medicinal properties of this plant. The verses quoted in ayurvedic texts are given here.

Shigruhu saraha katuhu paake teekshnoushno madhuro laghuhu | Deepanaha rochano rookshaha ksharastiktho vidahakrut ||

According to the principles of Ayurveda, the moringa or drumstick has katu rasa or pungent taste and tikta rasa or bitter taste. It is hot in potency. It is light to digest (laghu)  and imparts dryness to tissues (rooksha). It has strong piercing qualities (teekshna) which spreads quickly in the body.  This vitiates pitta dosha and alleviates Vata dosha and Kapha dosha.

Parts used:

Root bark, stem bark, leaves, fruits, and seeds are used for therapeutic purposes. They have their own unique medicinal qualities.

Ayurveda acharyas explain the health benefits of this plant as follows.

Chakshushyama shigrujam beejam teekshnoshnam vishanashanam |

Avrishyam kapahavataghnam tannasyena shiroarthihatam ||

Other Uses of Moringa in Ayurveda

This plant has an analgesic effect. It reduces the pain in joints and muscles. Hence it is used in various pain-relieving ayurvedic oils.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, the paste prepared from leaves is applied over inflamed parts. This is known as Shothaghna Lepa. It relieves pain, swelling, and redness.

Decoction obtained from parts of this tree has wound-healing properties. This decoction is used in washing wounds.

Side Effects of Moringa or Drumstick.

Due to its sharp properties, it increases the burning sensation in the body.  This should not be used by people who have gastric ulcers or very sensitive stomach.

Women should not use this during menstruation as it vitiates rakta or blood and pitta. It is not recommended even for bleeding disorders.

Other side effects

  1. Never use roots and root extracts of these plants. This can cause paralysis and death.
  2. The plant parts should not be consumed during pregnancy as they may cause uterine contractions.
  3. The use of fruits and leaves is not advisable in lactating mothers.
  4. Persons suffering from kidney problems should not include this vegetable in their diet.
  5. If you are using this vegetable for the first time, eat it in small quantities. Some people may develop severe allergic reactions after consuming fruit and leaves of this plant.
  6. Consult a qualified ayurvedic physician before using this plant’s parts as medicine.
